Cancún is not one beach. It is a seven-shaped sandbar with a boulevard down the middle and a bus that costs 12 MXN. People search "best beach in Cancún" and get a collage of the same turquoise. The water changes every two kilometers. The north bend is a pond. The south end is a shorebreak with a sign. The hotels in the middle put chairs on federal sand and hope you think you need a wristband.
All of it is public below the high-tide line. Mexican law. A hotel can rent you a lounger. It cannot own the Caribbean. This page is the named beaches, with km markers, so a family can pick one without a second tab.
How the Hotel Zone Is Laid Out
Boulevard Kukulcán is the spine. Kilometers start near downtown and run out to Punta Nizuc.
Km 0–8, the north hook. Lagoon on one side, calmer Caribbean on the other. Langosta, Tortugas, Las Perlas. Ferries, jet skis, families.
Km 8–14, the elbow. Forum / Gaviota Azul, Chac Mool. Clubs, Coco Bongo gravity, more wave.
Km 14–22, the south run. Marlín, Ballenas, Delfines, then Punta Nizuc. Open Caribbean. The photograph. The sargassum bill. Say the km to a bus driver. Do not say "the nice beach."
The Table
Swim column is the honest one. Sargassum is a week-to-week problem on this coast — 2026 has already been a heavy year on the trackers — so treat that column as a tendency, not a promise. Check a live map the morning you go.

Nichupté lagoon beaches (the inside of the 7) are not swim beaches. They are jet-ski alleys. Pretty at sunset. Do not take the kids there expecting a pool.
Playa Delfines — the One on the Fridge Magnet
El Mirador, km 17.5–18. Giant CANCÚN letters. Free lot that people swear holds 300 cars and also fills by 10am on a holiday Saturday. Municipal bathrooms, palapas, lifeguards roughly 9–5. No beach-club velvet rope. This is the default public answer and it deserves to be.
It is also the Hotel Zone beach most exposed to open Caribbean. Shorebreak gets sporty. Flags go red. Sargassum stacks here first because there is nothing between this sand and the drift. Crews rake it. March 2026 the city was already talking hundreds of tons off Cancún beaches in a single month. A clean morning can be a brown afternoon.
Come for the view and the photo. Swim if the flag is kind and the wrack line is not a wall. If you need to be in the water, this is often the wrong famous beach. Parking is free — arrive early or take the bus and skip the lot lottery.
Playa Langosta — the One I Send Families
Km 5, near the north hook, Plaza La Isla gravity. Water is usually the most civilized swim on the strip. Not a secret. Not empty. Lifeguards, bathrooms, a lot that does not feel like a pilgrimage. If Delfines is a seaweed photograph, come here before you flee the city.
Playa Tortugas — the Ferry Beach
Km 6.5. Ultramar terminal for Isla Mujeres sits in the same little commercial wad as the public access. Shallow, busy, banana boats, the whole carnival. Good if you are already catching a boat. Fine for a short swim. I would not build a quiet anniversary around it.
Forum, Chac Mool, Marlín, Ballenas
The middle of the 7 is where visitors staying in a hotel walk out and think the chairs in front of their tower are the only beach. They are not. Look for the blue-and-white public-access signs on Kukulcán. Walk between the daybeds. Put your towel on the tide line. Order nothing.
Forum is the party leak. Marlín and Ballenas are the better "we just want sand" answers if you are already south of the elbow and Delfines looks like soup.
Chair rental in front of a hotel is a hotel product. Prices move with the season and the manager. I will not print a fake $25. Ask, or sit on your own thing.
Punta Nizuc
The tip. Reef close enough that people sell snorkel trips off it. The sand is not Delfines. The water can be. Different morning. End of the R-1 line energy.
Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres Are Not "Cancún"
North of the Hotel Zone, past Puerto Juárez, a gated resort strip faces a calmer, often cleaner stretch. Marketing calls it Cancún. Geography calls it a different peninsula. Non-guests do not roll up to a Grand Hyatt gate and picnic. Public sand still exists at Playa del Niño in Puerto Juárez and further up toward Isla Blanca if you want kite wind and a rough road. Inside the Playa Mujeres enclave you are a guest or you are a problem at the booth.
If what you wanted was "Cancún but the water is actually a swimming pool," the honest move is often Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres — ferry from Tortugas or Puerto Juárez — or Puerto Morelos south when the Hotel Zone is having a sargassum week. Those are not Cancún beaches. They are why people leave Cancún for the day.
How to Ride the R-1 Instead of a $25 Taxi
R-1 and R-2 run the whole Hotel Zone. Stops in front of almost every tower. Updated September 2026 reports still have the Hotel Zone fare at 12 MXN, city routes 10 MXN, cash to the driver, small bills, no US coins.
Ocean-side stop to go downtown / toward Puerto Juárez. Lagoon-side stop to go further into the Zone / toward Delfines. Some R-1 windshields say Puerto Juárez — that is the Isla ferry if you do not want Tortugas.
A taxi inside the Zone is commonly 80–250 MXN depending on how far and how new you look. They do not use meters. Agree first. ADO now sells an airport → Hotel Zone (Plaza Fiesta) ticket around 140 MXN on a limited timetable. Useful to know. Not how you beach-hop.
What "Public" Means When a Waiter Is Staring
Sand and water: yours. Their chair: theirs. A path from the boulevard to the sea: supposed to stay open. If a security guy blocks a marked access, that is a PROFEPA conversation (800-776-3372), not a debate you win with adjectives.
Bring: towel, water, 12-peso coins, reef-unfriendly lotion you will not pretend is fine, a shirt. Delfines palapas go early.
