If you typed "this beach in Mexico has no rules" into a phone, you already know the punchline. The beach is Zipolite, on the Oaxacan Pacific, and the phrase is a TikTok caption, not a legal document.
What's true: Zipolite is the only public beach in Mexico where being nude is both socially normal and municipally recognized. The town legalized it in 2016 after decades of looking the other way. You can walk the whole 1.5 km of dark sand without a swimsuit. Plenty of people don't.
What's not true: that anything goes. Clothes go back on the moment you step onto El Adoquín. You don't photograph anyone without asking. You don't treat bodies like décor. And the Pacific here has a nickname older than the hippies — Zipolite is usually traced to a Zapotec line about a beach of the dead — because the rip doesn't care what you're wearing.
If you wanted a nude beach next to your Cancún airport transfer, stop. There isn't one. Temptation, Desire, and Hidden Beach are gated resorts with dress codes of their own. Different animal — I wrote those up separately. This page is the public beach.
The 40-second version
- Where: Playa Zipolite, San Pedro Pochutla municipality, Oaxaca. About 60 km east of Puerto Escondido, about 40–45 km west of Huatulco airport (HUX).
- What "legal" means: municipal recognition since 2016. Not a national law. Everywhere else in Mexico, public nudity is a local-decency problem and a cop can decide he cares.
- Do you have to be naked? No. Clothing-optional means optional.

- Nearest sane airport: Huatulco (HUX), not Oaxaca City.

Stand with your back to the palapas and face the swell. The beach is one long crescent, not a club with a rope.
- West end, toward the rocks. Most consistently nude. Quieter in the morning. This is where people who came for naturism actually sit.
- Center. Mixed. Families in suits, Europeans in nothing, a cooler, a soccer ball. Nobody is performing.
- East, toward town. More clothes, more vendors, easier walk to El Adoquín.
- Playa del Amor. The small cove off the east end — you scramble a bit to get there. Water is often calmer than the main beach, which is why people nap in it and also get slack about the rip. After dark this cove is the gay-leaning corner of Zipolite. If that's why you came, you already knew.
- Bahía Camarón. A little west-side pocket. Same idea as Amor: smaller, more naked, not a secret.
- El Adoquín / Colonia Roca Blanca. The actual town. Concrete, shops, rooms. Swimwear or a sarong. Nude on the street is how you meet a conversation you won't enjoy.
If a guide tells you "the whole town is a nudist village," they haven't walked to the Oxxo.
The water, which is the only rule that can kill you
I like this beach. I do not pretend it's a swimming beach.
The shore drops fast. The rip moves. Warm water talks you into a depth you haven't earned. Local reporting still treats drownings and disappearances as a live problem, not folklore. In June 2025 a visitor was pulled out near Playa del Amor and not recovered. In August 2026 naval teams assigned to the summer safety operation pulled two tourists off the same beach — red flag up, one of them drunk.
Before you wade: find a lifeguard and ask today, not yesterday. If they hesitate, that's a no. Don't swim alone, don't swim at night, don't swim after drinking. If you came to float, day-trip to a calmer cove — Carrizalillo in Puerto Escondido, some of the Huatulco bays — and treat Zipolite as a sun-and-walk beach.

Is public nudity legal in Mexico?
No national clothing-optional statute. Public-decency rules are municipal. In practice you get three tiers:
- Zipolite. Officially recognized. Nude on the sand is normal.
- Gated resorts. Hidden Beach, Desire, Temptation, a handful of others. Policy applies inside the fence. That's a hotel rule, not a public beach.
- Everywhere else. A quiet cove might tolerate topless for an afternoon. A family beach in the Cancún Hotel Zone will not. A cop in Cabo doesn't have to care that you saw a blog.
If you're asking "nude beach near Cancún" or "nude beach Tulum," the honest answer is: there isn't a legal public one. Drive or fly to Zipolite, or book a resort. Topless on a regular Caribbean hotel beach is a gray zone that works until it doesn't. I would not build a trip around the gray zone.
Can you go nude in Cancún, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, or Cabo?
- Cancún / Isla Mujeres / Hotel Zone. No public nude beach. Temptation Cancún is a topless-optional party hotel, not a free beach. Playa Norte is not it.
- Tulum. No legal public nude beach. Remote stretches toward Sian Ka'an get stories. Stories aren't a municipal ordinance.
- Puerto Vallarta. No legal public nude beach. Old rumors about south-bay coves aren't something I'd bet a fine on.
- Cabo. No. Santa María and Médano aren't clothing-optional, and the Pacific side of Lovers Beach is trying to drown you already.
- Sayulita / San Pancho. Quieter ends sometimes go topless. That's not Zipolite.

If you wanted a resort instead
Three properties absorb almost every "nude beach Cancún" search.
Hidden Beach Au Naturel (Kantenah, Riviera Maya). Adults-only, 42 suites inside the Karisma compound. Naturist-leaning, not lifestyle. Discounters in September 2026 were showing rooms from the mid-$300s a night; the suites people describe run higher. Price it as a couple. About 90 minutes south of CUN.
Desire Riviera Maya / Desire Pearl (Puerto Morelos). Couples-only, explicitly lifestyle. Playrooms, theme nights. Official September 2026 racks I checked sat around $300–450 USD per person on the cheaper room categories before packages. If you don't want that scene, don't book it because the photos looked like Hidden Beach.
Temptation Cancún. Topless-optional party hotel. Promos in September 2026 started around $180 USD per person per night. It is not a nude beach. It is a nightclub that lets you take your top off at the pool.

Who actually goes
Europeans who treat nudity like weather. Mexican weekenders who know exactly what the town is. A growing US contingent who arrived via the same video you did. Surfers who couldn't care less what you're wearing. Gay travelers who use Playa del Amor after sunset as the closest thing this coast has to a scene.
It is not a luxury crowd. Rooms still run roughly $15–40 USD a night for the hammock-and-fan tier, more if you want Hotel Nude or a proper AC box on the sand. If you need a pillow menu, you wanted Hidden Beach.
Etiquette at clothing-optional beaches
- No photos of people without a clear yes. The cardinal sin. Phones down on Playa del Amor unless everyone in the frame asked for it.
- Sit on your own towel. Basic hygiene.
- Bring a sarong. For El Adoquín, shops, and restaurants.
- Don't stare. The social contract dies the minute someone treats the beach like a show.
- Drinking is fine, intoxication is not. Sloppy behavior gets attention fast.
One couple's search checklist for a first clothing-optional trip — warm beach, small and secluded, optional rather than mandatory, and absolutely not a swinger scene — eliminated nearly everything in the Caribbean until they landed on the resort route instead of the public beach.
