People say "Tulum" and mean four different grids. Sort that out first and the rest of the trip gets a lot easier.
The four grids
Pueblo is the highway town. ADO, colectivos, tacos that aren't a brand, a place you can walk at night without a cart. The ruins sit a few kilometers east. This is where a trip stays sane.
Hotel Zone / beach road is the strip between the jungle and the clubs. Every photo, every minimum spend. Golf carts, because the road is long and the taxis know it. Sargassum hits this sand first.
Aldea Zama is the planned neighborhood in the trees, inland from the beach road. Pools, condos, a supermarket energy. Not the Pueblo, not the sand. You'll still pay for a cart to the water.
La Veleta is further in, cheaper, more house than hotel. Fine if you have wheels. A mistake if you thought you were "in Tulum" the way the brochure meant.
Is Tulum still worth it in 2026?
Yes if you came for the cliff ruins, a couple of beach hours, a cenote, and you sleep in the Pueblo or a Zama place you already priced. Go early. Leave the club-as-identity at home.
No if you wanted 2014, or a week of "just the beach," or Cancún logistics with Tulum prices. Isla's Norte is a better swim. Puerto Escondido is a better town. Puerto Morelos is a better nothing-burger Caribbean.
The ruins are still the only thing here that isn't for sale in USD. Do those at opening. The rest of the week is optional.
Power and water on the beach road still sulk after a storm. Not every week. Enough weeks that a beach-only hotel in October is a personality.
A day that works
Colectivo or walk-ish from Pueblo to the ruins for the 8:00 opening. Out before the heat and the line. Fish in town. One club or one cenote, not both if you're mortal. Cart home before the beach road becomes a parade.
